There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is not legal. Eight casinos are anchored in a generally small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are supposedly required to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous luxuries aside from the gambling den, which offers 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight table games.
